Fife is a maritime county in Scotland which became a council area in 1996 and can be located in the east of Scotland, recognised as a peninsula. Fife is home to many beautiful historic buildings predominantly made of stone which can be located in east fife. It was here that the fishing industry began and due to its expansion, settlements were established however, this particular industry has weakened tremendously over the years.
Building’s that are definitely worth a visit include St Andrews Cathedral and St Rule’s Tower. The Cathedral stood as the largest of its kind in the entire country and has degenerated significantly. Even though visitors will now find it in ruins, this does not doubt its architectural brilliance as it still remains a stunning sight regardless of its current form. The cathedral dates back from 1160 and a few of the walls currently appear intact. St Rule’s Tower offers magnificent views of Fife and was founded in the same time period as St Andrews Cathedral as it was originally part of the church.
St Andrews Castle is another impressive structure that sits well with St Andrews Cathedral & St Rule’s Tower. Visitors are able to explore inside the castle where they will find a ‘bottle dungeon’ and follow tunnels built in the medieval times. Fundamentally the Bishop’s Palace, historically, the castle was used for political and religious affairs and like the others, St Andrews Castle is also now in ruins.
Within close proximately is the British Golf Museum. The museum looks closely at the evolution of golf as a sport in the UK and around the world. It showcases important memorabilia collected throughout time creating a vivid depiction of the history of the sport and the legendary players that contributed towards the foundations of golf. The British Golf Museum is a must see for all golf lovers.
For a more tranquil experience, visitors can go to St Andrews Botanic Garden which spreads itself across 18 acres of garden land. It has been divided into various sections whereby on one hand you will find beautiful waterfalls and on the other are bushes and shrubs. The Botanic Garden offers a wide range of plants and flowers from different countries making it an enthralling experience for everyone.
Another great way to spend the day is to visit Fife Coastal Path, an excellent location for walking. There are plenty of pathways made providing a selection of routes for visitors to walk along however this is not a mere everyday walk, Fife Coastal Path presents a far greater encounter due to the various sights to see along the way. The picturesque landscapes make for a wonderful day out with family, friends or even alone as there is so much to see.
For entertainment you can visit The Byre Theatre showcasing the latest theatre productions. The theatre underwent severe development in 2001 when a new theatre was introduced with advanced technology, offering quality sound and lighting. Here, visitors can enjoy a choice of plays, comedies, opera’s, drama and dance.
