Essays are part and parcel of any academic course whether high school or college, you will be expected to write on various topics both in class and as part of your personal study. As soon as you reach your year in senior high school you ll be expected to research your essays, to read for information and to use the ideas of others to back up what you want to say in your essay.
When you re reading, it s a good idea to have a highlighter, if the material you are using is your own, as you can then highlight whatever information you think will be important in your essay.
Most essay questions are quite straight forward but you do need to read them carefully. Most questions will say things like describe and analyze, which means that part of your essay will be to give a description of whatever you re asked about and the second part involves analyzing that information by arguing a case for what you think the topic is about.
It s always a good idea to underline the key points of any question because knowing what you re being asked to do is half the battle in writing an essay.
Read only as much as you need for information on the subject, even in a set English text you will probably be required to answer a question on part of the book rather than the whole thing. So, just read the parts that are relevant to your essay. You may need to look at other texts to see what critics say about that piece of writing, but this is more common at a college level than it is in high school.
You should have several sources that you can use to make your argument. The chapter headings should give you an idea of what each chapter contains as should the blurb on the back of the book and on the fly leaf. When you re reading for information you don t need to read everything that you find, just pick out the important parts of the source material as you see them and ask questions from that material.
You should write notes when you re reading or you should brainstorm ideas once you have finished. Go over what you have brainstormed and pick out the important points, if you re writing a short essay of four to five hundred words, you need three main points. Pick out your points in order of importance, and use them in your essay. These points will be the main part of your arguments.
Put together your thesis statement. i.e., what you intend to argue at the top of the page you re going to use your points to argue for your thesis. Once you have done this you can start putting the essay together with an introduction that tells the reader what you are going to do, then your main points, followed by a conclusion that should wrap up your argument nicely.
Ideally, your conclusion should confirm your thesis statement, what you believe to be the case.
