Depending on what your car insurance policy dictates or what you have decided on your car insurance policy, there may be a clause in there that allows you to have other people driver your vehicle. Most often, you see this sort of thing in couples who are married. For example, my parents have a shared car insurance policy that lists both of their names as being people who are allowed to drive both of their vehicles. This policy also means that should anything happen to either one of their vehicles, they will both be liable.
If you are dating someone or live with someone and are thinking about letting them drive your vehicle, there are a few things that you should consider first. For example, what does this person s driving record look like? How often have they gotten pulled over by the police? More importantly, how often have they become involved in a motor vehicle accident with another driver? Recently, my boyfriend had a discussion with his car insurance company to update them with his new address (since we recently move into a new apartment), and the insurance company actually informed him that if he and I were living together and/or had lived together for a certain period of time that we could actually be listed on the same car insurance policy. The incentive there was that it would actually be cheaper to be listed under the same policy versus having two separate policies.
In the end, my boyfriend and I decided against being listed under the same insurance policy. Financially, it didn t make sense for us because we do not have a shared bank account, which would have meant that one of us would have to be responsible for having our account drafted for the car insurance (which I was not about to do). Additionally, my boyfriend s driving record is not as great as mine. Having been in several accidents previously, he currently pays more money in car insurance than I do (having been in only one minor accident).
These car accidents begin to add up very quickly and are something that people need to be aware of whenever they let other people drive their vehicle. It only takes a split second to become involved in a car accident, and if you are driving someone else s vehicle when it happens then you are really putting the owner of that car in a precarious situation because their car insurance company is going to want to know who was driving the car at the time of the accident, and if the police report shows that it wasn t you, then you are going to be in hot water if that person wasn t listed on your car insurance policy. Know the person that you are turning your keys over to. Even if it is a family member such as your mother, brother or father, if their driving results in your vehicle getting totalled, the liability is yours, not theirs. Make the right decision.
