The other day, I was driving along the highway when I saw the cars ahead of me swerving at the last minute into the other lane. I couldn t help but wonder what was in the lane that was preventing these cars from staying on track. When I got closer, I realized that it was a giant tire that must have come off of a tractor trailer.

The above is just one example of road hazards that you need to look out for. Road hazards can range in size, shape and item and be anything from an abandoned tennis shoe to an abandoned vehicle. Road hazards are also yet another reason why it is important for us to remain vigilant when we are driving along the roadways. Could you imagine what would happen if you hit a gigantic tire doing 70 miles per hour or more? What sort of damage would your vehicle suffer? What would happen? I cannot stress enough how important it is to pay attention when you are driving.

Recently, the state of North Carolina passed a law that prohibits drivers from using their cell phones to send text messages while they are driving. However, this hasn t stopped people. Why, just the other day, I was at a stoplight and saw the guy beside me in his car sending a text message and/or responding to an email. Granted, we weren t moving but still, shouldn t he have been paying attention to see when the light was going to change? What if there was someone who was approaching him pretty fast from behind? Would he have seen them in time to move out of harms way?

Road hazards only become worse as it gets darker outside. This is why so many advocate against driving at night if you can help it. Driving at night is dangerous for a number of reasons. First of all, if you live in a heavily populated area, and it s a Friday night, driving when it is dark out can mean that you are increasing your chances of becoming involved in a motor vehicle accident with someone else who is intoxicated. This is the last thing that you want and/or need. Similarly, if you live in an area that is not densely populated, you still run the risk of getting hurt. How? There are a lot of wild animals that come out at night in order to search for food, etc. and one of those animals are deer. Unfortunately, deer are one of the number one causes of motor vehicle accidents in many areas around the United States. If you live in the state of North Carolina, you have probably had your fair share of run ins with deer or perhaps you may even know of someone who has had a car accident involving a deer.

Whatever the case, the fact remains that driving is dangerous no matter where you live and regardless of the fact of whether it is light outside or not. While we cannot avoid each and ever accident that occurs, we can certainly prevent most of them by being vigilant and having one hundred percent of our focus on the road in front of and around us.
