Hugh Hefner’s ex girlfriend, Bridget Marquardt, is a huge fan of horror and the occult and so on her recent Croatia holiday she couldn’t resist visiting the haunted island of Lokrum. However, as Bridget soon found out the haunted island was not full of ghosts, but rather scenic plunge pools and hidden coves.
Bridget may have been caught diving in the crystal clear plunge pools by the local paparazzi, but in truth the island remains unusually secluded. Locals stay away from the island because of the curse, whilst tourists on their holidays in Croatia remain unaware of its charms. An ancient curse put on the island by the Benedictine Monks states that ‘Whoever claims for his personal pleasure shall be dammed’. This curse doesn’t seem to extend to tourists on their holidays and whilst the area is devoid of Croatian holiday villas it can be visited as a day trip from any number of the popular Croatia holiday resorts.
The remains of the monastery still stand on the island as does a rich botanical garden from 1859. On your holidays in Croatia you can spend a leisurely afternoon strolling around the magnificent gardens, which feature both tropical and subtropical plants originating from Australia to South America. The rich owners of this island felt the wrath of the curse when killed in mysterious circumstances and now it is only an ostentation of peacocks that dare to make the island their home. In fact, whilst on a ghost tour of the island Bridget was so shocked by the eerie call of the peacocks that she assumed she was in fact hearing one of the island’s legendary ghosts. Numerous ghosts of Benedictine monks have been spotted on Lokrum, particularly in the courtyard surrounding the monastery, and if like Bridget you have an interest in the occult then you may want to arrange a ghost tour whilst on your Croatia holidays.
The island even has its own Dead Sea and Bridget thought that she had succumbed to the curse of the island when she slipped foot first on the rocks surrounding it. However, had she fallen in, then like the Dead Sea in Israel, she would have simply found herself floating on the top, due to the large number of salt deposits.
Dubrovnik is considered by many to be the best place in the world for cliff diving and the island of Lokrum is certainly a hidden gem when it comes to the sport. Bridget and, Playmate of the year, Sara Underwood even tried their hand at the sport whilst filming for her successful television series. However, whilst cliff diving may look like a lot of fun, in reality the sport can be a little dangerous so it’s best to go with a qualified guide whilst on your holidays in Croatia.
With so many beautiful sights on the island of Lokrum, it’s hard to believe exaggerated tales of ancient Benedictine curses and if you take the time to visit the scenic island of Lokrum, whilst on your holidays in Croatia, then the only curse that you’re likely to befall is leaving to soon.
