Exmoor is one of the most stunning locations in the southwest. One of two National Parks in the region, the park straddles the counties of Devon and Somerset and has something to offer everyone.
Exmoor covers 276 square miles and is bordered by some of the most dramatic coastline in the region. Sweeping cliffs take visitors down winding country lanes to the broad, sandy beaches of Clovely – a surfer’s paradise. Dramatic moorland hides secret valleys where in spring the display of bluebells and snowdrops draws visitors from all over the world. It is a land of contrasts, and those who live and work on the moor are rightfully proud of this glorious part of the countryside.
Visitors form the biggest economic income onto the moor and accommodation is plentiful. Ranging from self catering holiday homes and barn conversions to seaside hotels and luxury villa apartments, the variety of accommodation is bound to suit almost any tastes. If you prefer a more family orientated centre, Minehead is home to the legendary Butlins with plenty of entertainment for everyone and a traditional seaside resort feel to the town.
Further inland, Exmoor is dotted with bed and breakfast accommodation, all of which is of exceptional standard. A warm and friendly welcome and comfortable surroundings in traditional ‘Devon Longhouses’ can transport you a thousand miles from the hustle and bustle of city life. There’s plenty of opportunity to go mountain biking or horse riding (whatever your level of skill) or if you prefer a more tranquil pace of life, Exmoor has some of the best salmon and trout fishing rivers in the UK.
Although particularly popular in the summer months, Exmoor is a year round destination and has its own, dramatic beauty even in the depths of winter. Many accommodation suppliers offer all year deals, particularly useful if you want to visit outside peak season or have a family party planned. Some of the larger accommodation is also suitable for parties of larger numbers such as hen or stag dos, where disturbing the neighbours with late night revelry is almost impossible!
Dogs are an important aspect of Exmoor, which is a working moor. So not only are two legged visitors welcome – four legged ones are as well. A quick check to your accommodation provider will soon tell you if your family pet is welcome on your break as well – the answer is usually yes!
Although some parts of Exmoor are remote, there are commercial centres close by such as the Somerset county town of Taunton or the seaside town of Barnstaple. Both offer superb shopping facilities and a myriad of shops and boutiques to browse in. A strong artist community on the moor produces some superb work in both canvas and ceramics, so there are plenty of unusual gifts to choose from to remember your stay on Exmoor.
